A Warm Welcome For Every Baby

Community baby shower surrounds parents and newborns with love

Community Baby Shower

Newborn Xavier and his mom, Cindy, were among the families celebrated at a community baby shower this spring. The event offered new and expecting parents access to resources to keep their kids safe and healthy, along with gifts of everyday items that are truly appreciated by parents making ends meet on a limited budget.

The event drew a full house of parents living in Milwaukee’s Choice Neighborhood (CNI), an area that includes the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee’s Westlawn and Westlawn Gardens neighborhoods.

CNI case manager and event organizer Monique Plears explained: “We wanted the parents to know that there are people out there to assist them in raising strong, healthy babies. They can feel confident they have someone to reach out and talk to when they need it.”

Sponsors and educational presenters included UnitedHealthcare; Strong Baby Sanctuary; the Milwaukee Health Department; Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin’s Safe Kids Wisconsin with car seat safety information; the African American Breastfeeding Network of Wisconsin; Fight Asthma Milwaukee Allies; the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Reach Out and Read of Greater Milwaukee; and Open Door Community Center of Jesus Christ.

Donte White of Safe Kids Wisconsin said it was important to bring information into the community: “Improper use of car seats is one of the top reasons for childhood injury, so events like these help us to educate parents about things they can do to keep their children safe.”

Being a baby shower, the event also featured games with the kinds of prizes that new parents appreciate: diapers, baby wipes, car seats, children’s books and more.

Many of the prizes were donated by the #1 Stunnaz Motorsports Club. “We love giving back to the community, and it’s important for these parents and kids to know their community supports them,” said club representative Adonis Ford.

Like the other parents and newborns, Cindy and Xavier felt the community’s embrace.

“It was helpful to learn about the resources, and I enjoyed meeting people,” said Cindy.  “And it’s really good to know people care.”
