MMSD names the neighborhood a "Green Luminary"

The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) has honored the Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee (HACM)'s Westlawn Gardens neighborhood as a "Green Luminary." According to MMSD, green luminaries "help protect our rivers and Lake Michigan by adapting practices that harvest rainfall for other uses or mimic nature by draining it into the ground to reduce water pollution."

MMSD honored HACM for recognizing "not only the need to manage stormwater, but also the need to innovate and grow, to create lasting good works that connect people and prosperity to the environment."

Westlawn Gardens, which is certified by the U.S. Green Building Council as Stage 3 Silver LEED-ND (Leadership in Energy & Environment Design-Neighborhood Development) and recognized as one of the highest-rated LEED neighborhoods in the world, features an extensive bioswale and water detention system for storm water management. The entire complex can capture and store 158,000 gallons of water each time it rains.
